For those new to biking or looking to get back into the sport after taking a few years off, the idea of getting onto a bike can seem daunting — but with an e-bike it doesn’t have to.

“E-bikes allow you to go further, ride longer and get in a great workout without the fear of overexerting yourself,” said Central Florida E-bikes owner Ryan Gaylord.

With a similar look and feel as a traditional bike, e-bikes or “electronic bikes” have electrical components that offer riders assistance as they pedal, thereby helping to propel the bicycle forward.

“All the bikes will have a throttle and either three or five levels of pedal assist,” said Ryan, “giving riders the option to pedal a little, a lot, or not at all.”

Locally owned and operated, Central Florida E-bikes opened in November 2021 after Ryan got his first e-bike and struggled to find a shop that would be willing to work on it.

“A lot of bike shops won’t work on the electrical components of e-bikes,” said Ryan. “So we decided to open Central Florida E-bikes, where we offer repairs, rentals and of course e-bikes for sale.”

In addition to e-bike repair, Central Florida E-bikes also does repairs on trikes, skateboards, scooters, Onewheels and Surrons.

They are also in the process of building their very own custom trikes. “It’s a recumbent e-trike, so you sort of lay down in it as opposed to a seat,” said Ryan. “We’re calling it the Tadpole.”

Central Florida E-bikes’ rental rate is $20 an hour or a 24-hour rental for $80. For those who mention this article, you can receive a buy-one-get-one-free on the rentals.

“Doing a rental is a great way for people to try it out and get a feel for the e-bikes before they decide to purchase,” said Ryan. “And if they do decide to purchase a bike after they’ve rented it, we will waive the rental fee.”

The bikes at Central Florida E-bikes range in price from $800 to $2000. The e-bikes can go between 30 and120 miles on a single charge, and weigh from 50 to 80 pounds.

Central Florida E-bikes is located at 247 N. Woodland Blvd. in DeLand. They are open 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Wednesday–Sunday, and Monday–Tuesday by appointment. They also do free group rides the second Sunday of every month.
