Class Notes: Many school events postponed or canceled; check schedules

This week’s column is being written during the weekend after Hurricane Ian struck Florida. Therefore, many events that were scheduled for last week did not happen or were postponed. Be sure to check the schedules of events before attending.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler Counties

The Boys & Girls Clubs had several major fundraisers taking place in early October. Some of these have been canceled, while others have been moved to November.

Those being moved include the Run and Walk for Success, presented by Tijuana Flats, which has been moved to Sunday, Nov. 13. The Deal for Success event, presented by Foundation Risk Partners, will take place Wednesday, Nov. 16.

Stetson University Homecoming

Stetson University Homecoming will take place Friday-Sunday, Oct. 28-30. This column was reminded that comedian Joe Gatto’s performance, at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, in the Edmunds Center, is free for students, faculty and registered alumni. All others will need to purchase tickets to attend.

Also, another reminder that the Wes Berner Homecoming Classic Golf Tournament has been canceled.

West Volusia high-school football

All the high-school-football games scheduled for Sept. 30 were postponed; therefore, there are no results to present at this time.

On Friday, Oct. 14, the following games are on the schedule: DeLand High hosts Sanford Seminole, Deltona greets Mainland, Pine Ridge is at Seabreeze, Pierson Taylor celebrates Homecoming aga ins t Lake Weir, Orange City University is at Spruce Creek, and Deltona Trinity Christian Academy travels to Winter Park Trinity Prep. All games are at 7 p.m., except that Pierson Taylor plays at 6 p.m.

DeLand High School Athletics

The DeLand High School volleyball team was stopped by New Smyrna Beach for the second time in one week. The score was 3-0, with the set scores being 24-26, 19-25, 21-25.

The DeLand High sports calendar finds many fall sports winding down their regular-season competition. At 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, the DeLand High Bulldog cross-country teams will compete in the Five Star Championships at New Smyrna Beach on the course at Doris Leeper Park.

On Monday, Oct. 17, the DHS varsity volleyball team enters district play, which will extend through Thursday, Oct. 20.

Also on Monday, Oct. 17, the boys’ golf team plays in the Five Star Golf Championships at 9:30 a.m., and the DeLand bowling teams host Matanzas at 3:45 p.m.

On Wednesday, Oct. 19, the Bulldog bowling squads travel to Pine Ridge to compete at 3:45 p.m.

Be sure to check on these events, as weather may have changed some of the times or days.

Volusia County middle-school cross-country

The Volusia County middle-school cross-country teams’ next race will be at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at Ormond Beach Middle School.

Stetson University Athletics

The Stetson University Hatter men’s soccer team tied Liberty, 2-2. The Hatters scored the first goal of the game, then had to score late in the game to knot the score at 2. Alessandro Gabbani and Gio Rodriguez scored the two Stetson goals.

The Stetson women’s cross-country team traveled north to Pennsylvania to compete in the Paul Short Invitational. The Lady Hatters placed ninth in the Brown Division, out of 46 teams competing. Cheyenne Durda was the top Lady Hatter finisher; she was in 22nd place out of 395 entrants, with 21:45.1 as her time for the race.

The next Stetson football game will be Saturday, Oct. 22, when the Hatters travel to the University of Dayton for a 1 p.m. game.

The Stetson men’s soccer team hosts Lipscomb at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, and the Stetson women’s soccer team greets Lipscomb at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16.

The Lady Hatters’ volleyball match with Florida Gulf Coast was moved from Sept. 30 to Wednesday, Oct. 19.
