DeLand Police Department Lieutenant Brian Kearney was recognized at Monday night’s city commission meeting on 23 years of service as he enters retirement.

Fellow officers presented Lt. Kearney a custom wooden plaque.

Lt. Kearney joined the force in May of 2000. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal in January of 2018 and then Sergeant in March of 2018. He ultimately advanced to the rank of Lieutenant on April 23, 2022.

He served in multiple divisions including Patrol Operations, Special Operations Division, Quartermaster and he worked as a Detective in the Criminal Investigations Division.

Chief Jason Umberger and the DeLand Police Department thank Lt. Kearney for his years of service to the City of DeLand.

The resolution presented at the city commission meeting reads as follows:

A RESOLUTION OF APPRECIATION AND RECOGNITION BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DELAND, FLORIDA, TO BRIAN KEARNEY UPON HIS RETIREMENT AFTER TWENTY-THREE YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE CITY OF DELAND; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

WHEREAS, Police Lieutenant Brian Kearney has dedicated his career to the safety and protection of our community and to the DeLand Police Department. He has been loyal to his fellow officers and the community throughout his career; and

WHEREAS, Lieutenant Brian Kearney was hired as a Police Officer by the City of DeLand May 22, 2000, was promoted to the rank of Corporal January 6, 2018, the rank of Sergeant March 3, 2018 and ultimately, advanced to the rank of Lieutenant on April 23, 2022. During Lieutenant Brian Kearney’s professional career, he was a member of multiple divisions within the police department; to include: Patrol Operations, Special Operations Division, Quartermaster and he worked as a Detective in the Criminal Investigations Division. During his thriving career he earned numerous letters of appreciation from DeLand residents and businesses, the City Manager, Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson, as well as past and present command staff. In addition, Lieutenant Brian Kearney received a letter of appreciation from FDLE for his participation in the statewide Operation Sexual Offender Apprehension Program (SOAP); and

WHEREAS, Lieutenant Brian Kearney, after twenty-three years of service to this community, will retire as a sworn Police Lieutenant; and

WHEREAS, Lieutenant Brian Kearney’s dedication and commitment to the City of DeLand and to the DeLand Police Department has earned the respect, admiration, and high regard of his superiors and his fellow officers, as well as that of the citizens of this community; and

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF DELAND, FLORIDA:

Section 1. That the City Commission of the City of DeLand does hereby honor Lieutenant

Brian Kearney for his twenty-three years of service to the City of DeLand and the DeLand Police Department for the duty, honor, courage, integrity, caring, respect, and loyalty he has devoted to the community.
