GARDEN — Artist of the Month Sandy Mason Clark with her acrylic piece inspired by her owers.

The West Volusia Artists club is focusing on Sandy Mason Clark as the April Artist of the Month. Her acrylic piece is called Welcome to My Garden. Inspired by her deck of beautiful flowers, the painting will be on display at the Wayne G. Sanborn Activity Center in DeLand during the month of April.
Clark was born in Baltimore, and lived in the Washington, D.C., area for 30-plus years. She and her husband moved to the DeLand area about four years ago.
As a child, Clark enjoyed evenings drawing with her dad. Art was her favorite subject in high school. Through the years, she has taken many classes and workshops with amazing instructors.
Clark studied at the Art League in Alexandria, Virginia, where she learned to paint in oils. Her philosophy about art is, “Don’t give up when you’re having difficulty. If you keep working to improve, you will be pleased with the results.” Clark’s show experience began in Davenport, Iowa, many years ago.
In DeLand, she participated in the “Artist in the Garden” show at Select Growers, which was a fundraiser for the Museum of Art – DeLand Guild. She had her own private show at the law office of Cobb Cole in Downtown DeLand last year.
Clark and her friend Patti Downey have done several large murals for local businesses. Their favorite is a beach scene with dolphins and flying birds above manatees, turtles, fish and coral. It was a labor of love.
Clark’s other interests include traveling, gardening and golf. Recently, she enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Morocco.
Clark also joined the Museum of Art – DeLand Guild. She heard about the group through the museum. Most recently, she has been invited to join the new ArtWorks DeLand co-op on West Indiana Avenue in Downtown DeLand.
About these groups, she said, “What a wonderful group of artists, who are so open and available to share their art knowledge and skills.”
West Volusia Artists meet 9 a.m.-noon on the first and third Fridays at the Wayne G. Sanborn Activity Center, 815 S. Alabama Ave. in DeLand. Special events include plein-air activities, demos, field trips and monthly challenges. All levels of art ability are welcome.
