Pierson Elementary School had its May Day celebration on May 24. The festival is a tradition that is unique to the city of Pierson and has been going on for nearly 40 years.

The Pierson Elementary May Day Festival is a time for students to take a break from the mundane tasks of mandated testing and practice a dance routine special to each class.

On May 24, parents of students gathered on the school’s basketball court ready to see their child perform. Doors opened for parents and other family members at 7:30 a.m., and the area was soon filled with community members who withstood the heat to see the celebration. Students had practiced rigorously all year to ensure every step was on beat with their classmates.

Classes performed one by one in descending order of grade level, fourth-grade through pre-K.

The Beacon spoke with Alison Kline, a teacher at Pierson Elementary School.

“The Day in May celebration is always an exciting time of year. I love seeing all of my former students dressed up as they graduate from elementary school and prepare for middle school,” Kline said.

A special part of this celebration was how Pierson Elementary chose to honor their fifth-grade graduating class: Each graduate was called individually and recognized in front of their family. Afterward, the Class of 2024 was escorted to the cafeteria for an award ceremony and complimentary lunch for the families.
