TheDeLand Quarterback Club is set to kick off its 60th season on Monday, Sept. 10, with Wayne Wheeler as the first guest speaker of the year. Wheeler was an All-American at Alabama, and played for the Chicago Bears. 

A Spruce Creek High School graduate, Wheeler later coached after being a professional athlete. 

TheDeLand Quarterback Club will meet this year at Venue 142 (formerly Brickhouse Grill) at 142 N. Woodland Blvd. in Downtown DeLand. 

A social hour begins at 5:30 p.m., with dinner being served at 6:30 p.m. and the guest speaker addressing the group at 7 p.m. 

Prior to the guest speaker taking the floor, the club will hear from the local football coaches, including Stetson University’s Roger Hughes. 

The QB Club is directed by Capt. Erik Eagan, with Don LeVeille serving as treasurer. 

The annual dues are $250, which includes meetings that will have nine or 10 guest speakers and dinner. The full amount is due by the first meeting in September. Guest fees are $50, while out-of-town guests pay $30. 

Checks can be sent to The DeLand Quarterback Club, P.O. Box 26, Lake Helen, FL 32744. For the first time, dues can be paid with debit cards, credit cards or online. 

This year, the club will name weekly the West Volusia Sports Medicine Player of the Week. This weekly award will recognize our local football standouts nominated by the local high-school football coaches from DeLand, Deltona, Pine Ridge, Taylor, Deltona Trinity and University high schools. 

The slate of speakers for the 2018 season is as follows: Wayne Wheeler, Sept. 10; Leon Bright, Sept. 17; Mike McBath, Sept. 24; coach Pete Adrian, Oct. 1; Andrew Brown, Oct. 8; Don Nottingham, Oct. 15; Fred Stokes, Oct. 22; Mike Bianchi, Oct. 29; TBA, Nov. 5; and Marc Edwards, Nov. 12.
