At least 10 people suspected of being involved in a West Volusia heroin-trafficking ring are now behind bars, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.
A seven-month joint investigation, operating under the name “Operation Geronimo,” culminated in the arrests and drug seizures Tuesday, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Andrew Gant.
The ring primarily operated in the Deltona and Orange City areas, Gant said. Sergio Perez, 42, and Melanie Cunningham, 27, both of Deltona, are the accused ringleaders. Both are facing charges of conspiracy to traffic a controlled substance.
The two were arrested Sept. 25 after a late-night traffic stop in Orange City.
“The traffic stop revealed Cunningham was in possession of methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, Suboxone, cannabis and cannabis oil,” Gant said. “Perez was also charged with possession of cannabis oil and booked into jail, where he remained held without bond Tuesday on several probation violations related to burglary and grand theft, and where he received his new charges Tuesday.”
Cunningham subsequently bailed out of jail on the traffic-stop-related charges, but was arrested again Tuesday on the trafficking charge.
The accused supplier of the ring, Roberto Segarra-Garcia, 44, of St. Cloud, was already in custody Tuesday, Gant said.
The collaborative investigation involved agents from the Volusia Bureau of Investigation, the Deltona Narcotics Enforcement Team, and the VCSO Major Case Unit.
A total of 10 suspects were in custody Tuesday morning, but additional arrests are pending, Gant said.
