Mary Farrell is October’s Featured Artist for the West Volusia Artists Inc., a DeLand-based organization founded in 1964.

Farrell’s acrylic painting Olive Trees With Sun After Van Gogh will be on display at the Sanborn Activity Center in DeLand throughout this month. She felt inspired to paint this exquisite piece by one of Vincent Van Gogh’s beautiful paintings.

Born in Detroit, Farrell moved to DeLand in 1984 from Ann Arbor, Michigan. To advance her artistic skills, she has taken classes with Helene Kereluk, Joe Sgarlata and Betty Parker at the Artists’ Workshop in New Smyrna Beach.

She joined the West Volusia Artists after hearing about the group at the Sanborn Activity Center.

Farrell’s advice to someone just starting out in art is to “have fun and practice.”

The West Volusia Artists meet to draw, paint, create and socialize 9 a.m.-noon on the first and third Fridays of each month, September-May, at the Sanborn Center, 815 S. Alabama Ave. in DeLand.

The group also organizes extra events such as artist demonstrations, art exhibitions, plein-air outings, art lectures, and trips to area museums.

Those wishing to join the West Volusia Artists may learn more by calling 386-738-5515 or by visiting www.sanborncenter.com and searching for the “Ongoing Activities” tab.
