artist sigurdur johannsson

The watercolor painting A Golden Mist by Sigurdur Johannsson is hanging prominently in the Deltona City Hall foyer. The artist, known as Siggi, is from Reykjavik, Iceland.

Johannsson saw a flash of a scene on the TV one day and decided to paint the scene from memory. The result is an ethereal, peaceful golden landscape.

For years, Siggi and his wife have come here to enjoy Deltona’s winter season, and when he is here, he joins the Deltona Art Club.

Though the pandemic restricted travel for two years, the Johannssons have returned this year and are enjoying reacquainting themselves with the area’s pleasures. In late spring, they will return to Iceland to enjoy the summer months there.

As a retired construction engineer, Siggi appreciates the beauty of structures and enjoys painting the old houses and streets of his homeland. His engineering background assists him with the perspective challenges inherent in the painting of structures. He also enjoys painting landscapes of the beautiful vistas, mountains, volcanic rocks and glaciers of Iceland.

Siggi has been painting with watercolor for about 25 years. He enjoys the challenges of the medium.

He says with a smile, “With watercolor, you must be patient and you often have to start again.”

The Deltona Art Club, established in 1968, is one of the oldest continuously running art clubs in Central Florida. Artists working in any medium are welcome to join the club, which meets on the second Wednesday of the month September-May.
