SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS — Brooke Ferrara and Sean Gaudreault, both of DeBary, have been awarded science scholarships by the DeBary Scholarship Foundation for their exceptional academic accomplishments and community service. A graduate of University High School in Orange City, Ferrara received $750. She will attend the University of Central Florida, majoring in mechanical engineering. Believe it or not, Volusia County public-school students begin the 2022-23 school year in about a month. Students will report for their first day Monday, Aug. 15. Preplanning has teachers reporting to their schools Tuesday, Aug. 9.

DeLand Kiwanis scholarships

The Kiwanis Club of DeLand recently presented 15 West Volusia students with scholarships, each worth more than $6,000. The recipients are: Ethan Billette, Braylee Blackwelder, DeLaney Brosen, Ethan Myrick and Ian York of DeLand High School; Christopher Cerroni, Kevin Rondon and Emily Wilder, Deltona High; Vivienne Merk and Chandler Powers, University High in Orange City; Hannah Mitchell, Deltona Christian School; Shayna Brooks and Sara Borden, Daytona State College; Jeremiah Birch, the University of Central Florida; and Tony Capizzi, Stetson University.

YOUNG BOWLERS — Five DeLand youth, who are members of the Sunshine Youth Bowling League, recently competed in the Junior Gold Bowling Tournament in Michigan. They are, from left, Tyler Sprague, Josh Barger, Junior Peterson, Carlie Cayton and Jesse Barger. Tyler, Josh, Junior and Jesse are students at DeLand High School and will bowl on the varsity bowling team this fall. Carlie is an incoming freshman and will try out for the team.

Stetson University Athletics

During the Stetson University Homecoming celebration this year, the Wes Berner Homecoming Classic Golf Tournament will take place Friday, Oct. 28, on the DeBary Country Club course. This tournament is sponsored by Stetson Athletics, and all proceeds will benefit the 18 Stetson Hatter sports programs. For more information, email Augusta Thramer at athramer1@stetson.edu.

Stetson Athletics is now accepting nominations for the Hall of Fame, Class of 2022. To be eligible, nominees must have completed their athletic eligibility at Stetson by the 2016-17 academic year. They must also be athletes who made outstanding contributions in athletics as students at Stetson University, or coaches of Stetson’s intercollegiate teams, or Stetson University administrators, or other individuals who have made significant contributions to Stetson athletics.

College honors

Bradley Sisk, of DeBary, earned the distinction of Faculty Honors for spring 2022 at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.
