Lake Helen residents made their voice heard at a City Commission meeting April 11.
A variance request from a resident for four housing units on 1.85 acres of land faced strong public opposition. Public comment was harsh but firm on the stance that Lake Helen needs to remain within its rule book, which in this case was one home per 2 acres.
“When it comes to rezoning our space and bringing our homes closer together with low density housing…we are changing the footprint of Lake Helen as we know it,” resident and former City Commissioner Kelly Frasca said. “What has changed so much that we don’t want the Lake Helen that we had?”
After public comment, City Commissioner Linda Donato spoke to the couple who petitioned for the variance
“You’re building four houses, maybe five … Do you plan on renting the property out?” Donato asked.
The owners responded, “We truly have no idea.”
The City Commission was not swayed by the owners, but did seem persuaded by the public speakers, of which there were three.
“I feel really bad for this couple that’s come up wanting to build on their property,” Donato said. “I’m really sorry about this but I have to listen to my constituents.”
The City Commission voted unanimously, 5-0, to refuse the variance.
