GETTING SOMETHING FREE DRAWS A CROWD — Deltonans queue up to go into City Hall to wait for their chance to get a tree to take home for shade, enjoyment or curb appeal. The city offered residents one of four types of trees: Chickasaw plum, crape myrtle, Eastern redbud or sweetbay magnolia. Those asking for a tree were required to show proof of Deltona residency.

Although city workers stay busy in their offices or outdoors, and although the banks, schools and post offices are not closed, Arbor Day is a big occasion in the biggest city in Volusia County.

Arbor Day has become a spring tradition in Deltona, and the city gives away trees as part of the celebration. Arbor Day 2024 may be the biggest for Deltona thus far, in terms of participation and excitement. The turnout for Arbor Day was more than what city officials had expected.

As the weather warmed, and as people were attracted to the new life showing in their surroundings, large numbers could not resist the temptation to get something free — a tree to take home and plants, as well as popcorn and lemonade for refreshments— at City Hall.

Like DeLand, Deltona has the honor and distinction of being a Tree City, as recognized and proclaimed by the Arbor Day Foundation.
